Transcript: According to Electric-Vehicles.com, Chinese automaker Nio is officially backing away from plans to sell cars directly in the U.S. A former employee confirmed that mounting U.S. cybersecurity rules—specifically January’s ban on connected Chinese cars—have essentially made Nio’s entry “effectively illegal.” Nio had already frozen U.S. expansion operations last year and laid off its Chief Business Officer.
Instead, Nio’s technology will arrive in the U.S. indirectly—through a new licensing arrangement with McLaren Automotive. That deal is part of a sweeping restructuring led by CYVN Holdings, an Abu Dhabi investment group that now controls McLaren and is also Nio’s largest shareholder with a $2.94 billion stake. A new McLaren Licensing entity will use Nio's platforms and software in future vehicle development.
Despite the tech partnership, don’t expect a fully electric McLaren anytime soon. McLaren’s CEO Nick Collins says the brand is in no rush, noting that internal combustion engines will remain central to its identity for now. He stressed that regulatory and market conditions vary too widely across regions—especially with the slower EV adoption in the U.S.
