Around 3,200 years ago practically every major civilisation in the Mediterranean collapsed at the same time. The Hittites, Mycenaean Greece, Ugarit, Cyprus, all gone within a few decades. Egypt survived and left behind records blaming a mysterious group they called the Sea Peoples, and for most of the 20th century historians just ran with that. Powerful invaders came from the sea and brought the Bronze Age to its knees. Clean story, makes sense, move on. But then in 2022 ancient DNA analysis came back from burial sites connected to Sea Peoples activity and it basically fell apart. These weren't a unified invasion force at all. They were coming from multiple different places, they mixed into local populations within a couple of generations, and the Egyptian texts themselves describe women, children and cattle travelling alongside the fighters. That's not an army, that's people fleeing something.
