Social media platforms in court and AI is reshaping job markets.
These are two stories about accountability and what's coming next.
I unpacked both with Ahron Young on Ticker this morning.
On the Meta, TikTok, and YouTube trial:
A 19-year-old woman is suing social media platforms for addiction and mental health harm.
Her claim: platforms are designed to make users addicted through features that compel constant checking.
The case is focused on social media's addictive features.
Mark Zuckerberg is testifying. Snap settled out of court.
This is the first case of its kind.
If she wins, the floodgates open.
The argument:
Instant gratification.
Constant notifications.
Features designed to keep you scrolling.
Yes, platforms added parental controls and time-limit warnings, but only after years of operation.
Will those measures stand up in court? We're about to find out.
The bigger question:
Where does accountability sit?
On AI's impact on job markets:
A study of 935 companies across multiple countries found that:
The UK is already cutting 8% of entry-level and mid-range jobs due to AI.
In Australia only 12% of companies using AI in a significant way.
In the US graduating students struggling to find first jobs because entry-level roles are disappearing.
The pattern:
AI handles lower-level tasks and administrative work.
Companies stop hiring and training new graduates.
Working your way up becomes impossible if you never get that first chance to start.
Two stories. One theme.
Accountability matters.
Whether it's social media addiction or job displacement.
The question is: who's responsible when the technology changes everything?
