Some argue that the United States has carried a disproportionate share of defense spending for decades, while many European allies have struggled to meet the agreed 2% GDP defense target. Supporters of a more “America First” approach believe it’s time for allies to contribute more and take greater responsibility for their own security.
Others, however, point out that NATO provides strategic advantages—strengthening global stability, deterring major conflicts, and amplifying U.S. influence abroad.
