Released in arcades by Atari Games (shortly before it became Midway Games) in 1998, Vapor TRX is a futuristic racing game where the player chooses one of 6 different flying craft and races on 4 tracks as part of a field of 16 other craft. Up to 4 machines can be linked together for multiplayer. The player's craft is equipped with cannons that can be used to attack and destroy other craft, and you can also collect and use homing missiles, which are very limited but powerful enough that one good shot can wipe out an enemy. This helps level the field in the player's favor. The player can also touch green columns for a quick speed boost-the lower to the ground the player touches these boosts, the more powerful the boost. The player also has turbo boosters that are recharged passing through checkpoints that also extend the timer-if the player can touch or get close enough to the moving green line at checkpoints, turbo is fully recharged. If the player can finish first on a track a free game may be awarded depending on the machine's settings. If the player can win on all 4 tracks (they're not kidding about the Extreme difficulty on the final track!), the player completes the circuit and finishes the game.
Like similar games/series at the time, such as Nintendo & Midway's Crusin' series & Off Road Thunder, and Atari's other similar racer "California Speed", the game featured digital video footage of attractive women as encouragement/motivation to keep players going.
Note: Due to the game's hardware and emulation-related issues, there are several times where there are delays of 3-5 seconds. This is about the time where games running on PC and CD-based consoles (like the PlayStation) began to take over arcades as games became bigger with systems mirroring low-end PCs, a trend that continues to present day.
