Technically any scale with eight notes is an octatonic scale, but in common practice the term Octatonic Scale refers to the scale with alternating half and whole steps.
The mode starting with a half step is an Octatonic or Octatonic HW scale (HWHWHWHW)
while mode starting with a whole step is an Diminished or Octatonic WH scale (WHWHWHWH).
No other modes are possible since starting on the third note of either scale produces the same scale pattern.
The 12-form version of the octatonic scale actually only has three enharmonically unique forms.
Adapt the key signature to whatever note is acting as the root.
These scales work well over diminished seventh chords and as dominant substitutions.
