Welton – “Spring Farmstead”

This week in the East Riding we complete the Humber Estuary! Its been a while coming, but after this, both sides of the major UK river will be complete in their entirety! The last one with a shoreline on the Northern bank is Welton, possibly one of the most historic and pretty villages the county has on offer. Comprised of two villages – Welton and Melton – and an abandoned settlement called Wauldby – the parish extends from the Humber, North onto the Yorkshire Wolds, and landmarks in this part of the world are much more plentiful than you may think!

At first glace you need look no further than the village green, which has an unusual fountain, built by a former resident. Further afield, Welton has a watermill, and several grand mansions including Welton House and Welton Garth. Education is a key feature of this parish. There are several schools, including statistically, one of the best in the UK – South Hunsley.

That’s in Melton, which used to have two big local employers in the form of a cement works and the Capper Pass Tin smelter. These days you’re more likely to be seen on the industrial estate with a bottle of wine…or in a police car. I would hope one has no correlation with the other.

It’s a historic and picturesque place on the whole, so lets walk and admire it all!
