Ok, so one of the more interesting things about the vagus nerve is how closely it works with your breathing rhythm. As you inhale, heart rate naturally rises slightly, and as you exhale it slows again. This natural rise-and-fall pattern, known as respiratory sinus arrhythmia, is one of the ways the vagus nerve helps regulate the body's shift into rest and recovery states.
Well, vagus Waves was designed around that same principle.
Rather than using static sound, I shaped the movement of the low frequencies to gently rise and fall in slow cycles, loosely mirroring the body’s natural breathing pace. The idea is simple: when sound follows biological rhythms the nervous system already understands, it may become easier for the body to gradually synchronise and settle.
Many slow-breathing studies show that reducing breathing speed can increase vagally mediated heart rate variability, which is associated with parasympathetic activation and relaxation.
From that starting point, this soundscape was built around two core elements:
Undulating Vagus Hum
Built from a deep grounding rumble, warm low drone, soft theta pulses, and gentle brown noise, this blend helps calm the vagus nerve and guide the body toward deep sleep.
Resonant Vagal Drone
Built from a steady low-mid hum with minimal movement and a centered tone, this sound promotes nervous system safety, supporting vagal calm and easier sleep onset.
Now, with those foundations in place, I went back into the studio and began shaping the motion of the sound itself. The slow rises and falls were carefully timed to feel natural rather than mechanical, more like a tide than a metronome. I softened the transitions between layers, reduced anything that might pull attention, and blended the tones until everything moved as one slow physiological wave.
There’s nothing here to track and nothing to follow. Just a slow, predictable movement designed to stay in the background while your nervous system gradually lets go of the day. If you're looking for something gentle and steady tonight, something that may help your breathing slow and your system soften, I hope Vagus Waves gives you that space.
Sleep long and sleep well, friends.
MADE USING: Layered vagal drones, slow oscillating low-frequency modulation, theta pulse shaping (~6 Hz), brown noise texturing, breath-timed amplitude movement, and studio tone sculpting
