Описание: Here we will try to have an Introduction to Decimal Number System.

Before having an Introduction to Decimal Number System we will try to understand what is meant by a Number System.

Number System:

Definition: A Number System is a System of writing for expressing numbers. Every number system has a notation to represent numbers using numbers.

The definition states that every number system has way so that we can express the counting.

For example, if you are given a packet of stones and asked to count and express the number of stones in the bag.

If you have counted the stones and finally found the number of stones in the bag to be 20.

20 is a way or a system of writing to express numbers. This is one of the ways to express the numbers.

Similarly, there are 100 different ways to express the same 20 counts like XX (Roman Number System), 10100 (Binay Number System), etc.

Hindu - Arabic number system is the most common system for the symbolic representation of numbers in the world.

Types of Number Systems:

There are different types of number systems are available, in our course we will discuss the following.

Decimal Number System.
Binay Number System.
Octal Number System.
Hexadecimal Number System.
Decimal Number System:

In this discussion, we will have an Introduction to Decimal Number System.

Definition: A Decimal Number System is a Positional Weighted System with 10 unique symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 7, 8, 9. The Base or Radix of Decimal Number System is 10.

The decimal number system has 10 unique symbols.

Why 10 unique symbols?

Most of the ancient number systems like Bhrami,  Greek Number System, Chinese Number System have 10 symbols.

Because in ancient days people used to use 10 fingers to count the things.

Every combination of the fingers to count is uniquely represented by a unique symbol.

The Base or Radix of Decimal Number System is 10.

For example, consider (84356)10 decimal numbers or any decimal number of any size it is based on the above basic symbols.

So the base or radix of a decimal number is 10 based on 10 unique symbols.

Similarly, the Binary Number System has a base of 2 (Any binary is number is based on 2 unique symbols 0 and/or 1.

An octal number system has a base of 8 (means 8 unique symbols) and the hexadecimal number system has a base of 16 (16 unique symbols).

A Decimal Number System is a Positional Weighted System.

The value or weight of the symbol in a decimal number system is based on the position of a symbol from the decimal.

For example, consider the decimal number (9999.55)10.

In the above decimal number, we have the same symbol 9 to the left of the decimal number and symbol 5 to the right of the decimal number.


The position of a number to the left of the number starts from 0 and increases gradually and the position of the number to the right of the decimal starts from -1 and increases gradually.

Does the first 9 to the left of the decimal number has the same value as the second 9?

NO.
