I have 2 kids who have 2 very different ways of experiencing the world around them.
These 3 regulating activities work for both of them!
SAVE IT • TRY IT
These activities provide vestibular and proprioceptive input, and that deep pressure to the muscles, tendons, and joints, is calming and regulating (both for kids AND adults!)
When you start to see signs of dysregulation in your child, give these activities a try (and don’t forget to save for later!)
1. Snug as a Bug
On top of some vestibular stimulation from the rolling (roll slowly!), the deep pressure and sensory input to their muscles and joints that comes with being wrapped up can be extremely calming and regulating for one’s nervous system.
2. Stepping Stones
This tackles all kinds of developmental skills, like balance, focus, coordination, and spatial awareness, all while providing proprioceptive input.
[Proprioception is the hidden sense that is responsible for processing our body awareness, movement, and where your body is in space.
Aside from having a good sense of your body, proprioceptive input provides calming, organizing, and regulating input to your nervous system.]
3. Basket Balls
This has similar benefits to Plow Pose in yoga, it stimulates the internal organs, stretches the shoulders and spine, challenges abdominal muscles, and provides that deep pressure, proprioceptive input that helps with regulating one’s nervous system.
