Verse 1:
Oh, shame is a prison as cruel as a grave
Shame is a robber and he's come to take my name
Love is my redeemer Lifting me up from the ground
Love is the power where my freedom song is found
Chorus:
There ain't no grave Gonna hold my body down
(Repeat line x2)
When I hear that trumpet sound I'm gonna rise up outta the ground
There ain't no grave Gonna hold my body down
Verse 2:
Fear is a liar with a smooth and velvet tongue
Fear is a tyrant always telling me to run
Love is a resurrection and love is a trumpet sound
Love is my weapon I'm gonna take my giants down
Chorus:
There ain't no grave Gonna hold my body down
(Repeat line x2)
When I hear that trumpet sound
I'm gonna rise up outta the ground
There ain't no grave Gonna hold my body down
Bridge:
There was a battle A war between death and life
And there on a tree, The Lamb of God was crucified
He broke the power of hell and He holds every key
He rose up as a lion now He setting all the captives free
Chorus:
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down
(Repeat line x2)
Outro
When I hear that trumpet sound I'm gonna rise up outta the ground
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down X2
"From Master's Chains to Freedom's Reign"
In the deep South, under the harsh sun, there lived a Christian slave named Emmanual. His life, a tapestry of sorrow and pain, was marked by the heavy chains of servitude. Yet within his heart burned a flame unquenched by the despair of his condition—a flame kindled by the hope of the Resurrection.
"Shame is a robber," Emmanual would whisper to himself as he toiled in the fields, his words a balm to his aching soul. "And he's come to take my name." But his faith, his rock, spoke of a Redeemer, lifting him from the depths of his plight. "Love is my redeemer," he hummed, a melody of hope amidst the cries of his fellow slaves.
Amidst this backdrop of suffering, an unlikely friendship blossomed. Amos, the young son of the slave master Linus, found companionship in Emmanual. Naive to the world's harsh rules, Amos taught Emmanual to read, their secret lessons a beacon of light in the darkness of Emmanual's world.
Their bond, however, was not meant to last. Upon discovering their forbidden reading lessons using his father's tattered old Bible, Linus flew into a rage. As Emmanual was being whipped nearly to death, the hope of his savior overwhelmed him, and he sang out in an angelic voice, "There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down." The whole plantation could hear his song as he clung to the promise of freedom beyond the physical world.
Emmanual, faced with cruelty, found solace in the story of Christ's crucifixion. "There was a battle, a war between death and life," he'd recount to his fellow slaves, his voice a testament to his unshakeable faith. "And there on a tree, the Lamb of God was crucified."
Emmanual's understanding of Christianity stood in stark contrast to that of his white oppressors. "They mus' have a different Bible," he'd ponder, unable to reconcile the teachings of Jesus with the actions of those who claimed to follow Him. Yet, he refused to succumb to hatred. "Fear is a liar," he'd remind himself, choosing instead to love his enemies in clever, subtle ways—a shared smile, a silent prayer, a helping hand.
This spiritual resilience was not unnoticed. Amos, witnessing Emmanual's unwavering faith, began to question the world his father upheld. In Emmanual's eyes, he saw a different kind of strength, one not derived from power or fear, but from love and forgiveness.
As Emmanual aged, his body grew weary, but his spirit remained unbroken. "Oh, if you walked out of the grave, I'm walking too," he'd sing, his voice echoing through the fields, a symbol of defiance against the chains that bound him.
The day of Emmanual's passing was one of both mourning and celebration. As his fellow slaves gathered around, a chorus rose among them, a song of hope and resilience. "There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down," they sang, their voices carrying the legacy of Emmanual—a man who, through faith and love, broke the chains of despair and inspired a spirit of hope that would outlive him for generations.
A story inspired by the song. This is not a true story.
