What Tongans use to make traditional mats. Fau (ta'ovala or kiekie)
Tongans cut down a hibiscus plant and scrape off the outside bark then bury the sticks in the sea with rocks.
They then take off the inner bark and dry it and get it ready for making traditional mats or ta'ovala or kiekie..
We are documenting our lifestyle and what we do survive in the pacific.
We live off grid and are slowly building or house and raising animals and vegetables to survive on. We sell baked produce to the local stores to keep us going with an income.
