Overgrown entanglements can be extremely difficult to detect, especially when a seal's skin has healed and built a scar over the fishing line, forming a new protective layer without breaking the plastic loop. These scars often resemble scars from previous disentanglements, with only small knots or tags visible as clues. In remote areas like Torra Bay, there are no such things as recaptures. Rescue patrols can only happen every few months. By the time the OCN team returns for the next patrol, most wounds from previous rescues have healed up and can no longer be detected.
This seal was incredibly fortunate to be found, as the loop would have continued to tighten with the seal's natural growth, causing severe harm. Well done, Chelsea!
