Everyone today is telling us the same thing: “Do hard things.” And in many ways, that advice is absolutely right. Choosing difficult paths can build discipline, strengthen character, and make us better people.
But there’s a trap hidden inside that idea.
In this video, I talk about why our motivation for doing hard things matters just as much as the act itself. Discipline is valuable—but as Christians, the deeper question is why we pursue it.
Interestingly, the words “discipline” and “disciple” come from the same Latin root. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be disciples. And living as a disciple often requires discipline—choosing what is difficult over what is easy.
But there’s an important difference between doing hard things for selfish reasons and doing them for God’s purposes.
If we chase difficulty simply because we enjoy the rewarding feeling that comes after accomplishing something hard, we can easily turn discipline into another form of self-centeredness. The hard thing becomes about our pride, our achievement, and our feeling of accomplishment.
However, when we willingly embrace difficult things to honor God and fulfill His will, discipline becomes something entirely different. It becomes an act of obedience and faith.
In this video, I explore how doing hard things can either become a spiritual trap or a path to deeper discipleship, depending on the intention behind it.
If you’ve ever wondered how discipline, faith, and purpose connect in the Christian life, this message is for you.
