On an August afternoon in 1889, William Clarke, a stone mason in Hebden Bridge, headed uo to Heptonstall with his brother Thomas to The Dog and Partridge Inn. Much drinking took place, Thomas headed home, and William headed to an upstairs room with 3 female companions who had joined the brothers at the Inn.
11.30 that evening, the broken body of William Clarke was found on the cobbles of Towngate, directly outside the Inn. It seemed he had fallen from the attic window, but why was he up there and, the big question, had he fallen or been pushed?
The mystery of William Clarke's death remains a mystery 135 years later......
