This February, 2021 Flathead Audubon Society General Meeting featured Doug Bonham discussing monitoring and tracking devices to learn more about behaviors and movements of the animal kingdom.
Doug Bonham started birding in Maryland in 1966 with a guy named Chandler Robbins who had the audacity to publish a bird field guide to compete with what was then the only bird field guide - Roger Tory Peterson's Field Guide to Birds. He navigated the dramatic split in the birding community between those remaining loyal to Roger Tory and the renegades using the new book.
When Doug arrived in Montana in 1975 he discovered that Missoula had no Audubon chapter. So he started one - Five Valleys Audubon which is still vibrant today. After earning degrees in Wildlife Biology and Electronic Engineering, he worked alternatingly as a biologist and engineer. His custom tracking devices have been used on dozens of critical wildlife species around the world. Today he has a day job with Microsoft's Surface Pro devices and weekends with his new Montana non-profit, Field Data Technologies which has obtained $825,000 of US Department of Agriculture grants to design new types of wildlife instrumentation.
