Located in the Puducherry district on India’s southeast coast, the city is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east and is encircled by the state of Tamil Nadu, with which it shares a common culture, heritage, and language.

Pondicherry has a tropical savanna climate, according to the Köppen climate classification, similar to coastal Tamil Nadu. It specifically falls under the dry-winter category (Aw), but borders on the dry-summer type (As), as March has the fewest rainy days—averaging just 0.7 days and 18.5 mm (0.73 in) of rainfall. Summer spans from March to early June, with temperatures sometimes reaching up to 41 °C (106 °F) between April and June. On average, the maximum temperature during this period is around 36 °C (97 °F), while the minimum ranges from 28 to 32 °C (82–90 °F). From June to September, the region experiences high humidity with occasional thundershowers.

The northeast monsoon begins around mid-October, bringing most of the city's annual rainfall from October to December. The southwest monsoon also contributes smaller amounts of rain between June and September. Pondicherry receives an average annual rainfall of about 1,355 mm (53 inches). The dry season extends from January to June, with February being the driest month, receiving just 16.9 mm (0.67 in) of rainfall. Winters remain warm, with daytime temperatures around 30 °C (86 °F) and nighttime lows dropping to around 18–20 °C (64–68 °F).

Pondicherry is linked to Chennai by the East Coast Road, passing through Mahabalipuram. Regular bus services operate daily from various major points in Chennai. Within the city and to other destinations, the Pondicherry Road Transport Corporation provides bus services. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation offers air-conditioned buses connecting Chennai and Pondicherry.
