It's generally not recommended to disconnect a motorbike battery's positive terminal first.
While in many cases it may not cause any immediate harm, there are some potential risks involved:
1. Increased chance of sparks and short circuits: The positive terminal carries the active current. Disconnecting it first while other parts of the electrical system are still connected (even indirectly) could create sparks if the wrench touches any metal parts. This can be especially dangerous near flammable materials or if there are fuel leaks.
2. Damage to electrical components: A sudden rush of current can occur when the positive terminal is disconnected, potentially damaging sensitive electronic components, especially if there are pre-existing weaknesses or glitches.
3. Memory loss in some electronics: Disconnecting the battery completely can cause some systems, like radios or onboard computers, to lose their settings or stored data. While this is usually recoverable when reconnecting the battery, it can be an inconvenience.
While these risks are not guaranteed to happen every time, it's always safer and best practice to follow the recommended procedure:
Disconnect the negative terminal first (usually black):
This cuts off the main power flow to the bike, minimizing the risk of sparks and short circuits.
Disconnect the positive terminal (usually red):
Once the power is off, safely remove the positive terminal.
Remember, safety first! Always consult your motorcycle's owner's manual for specific instructions and safety precautions before working on the battery.
