The Fields of Athenry was written by Pete St John in 1979. It is often attributed as being a folk melody as it is written very much in that style. It has been a great success for many artists, particularly in Ireland. Many people know it as a number of sports teams have adopted it as an unofficial anthem.
In my arrangement I have fingered it often in higher positions. Although this may be more challenging technically, I wanted to communicate the sadness of the text; a sentiment I feel is better communicated when playing higher up the guitar neck. I have been inspired by the great arrangements of Pujol in this sense. Less-experienced players may choose to refinger in lower positions.
