Northumberland: 3. National Trust Cragside – The First ‘Smart’ Home

Описание: Cragside, perched high on its rocky crag, captured our imagination. This Victorian country Arts and Crafts house was the home and vision of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong and his wife, Lady Margaret Armstrong. Designed by Richard Norman Shaw in a Tudor Revival style, they had it built on moorland near Rothbury, by extending an original small shooting lodge into the mansion seen today. Gardens were created and the wider grounds contain 43 miles of pathways, over 7 million trees and a 6-mile carriage drive full of rhododendron. Armstrong was an industrial magnate, scientist, philanthropist and inventor and Cragside was the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity and hydraulics, which harnessed the power from nearby dams and lakes created on the estate. A sawmill, a water-powered laundry, early versions of a dishwasher and a dumb waiter, a hydraulic lift, a hydroelectric rotisserie, a Turkish bath suite and central heating were just some of the “mod cons” their guests could marvel at – “the palace of the modern magician”.
