I collect pictures of guitars that I would like to build. I find them all over the place. I think I found this guitar on Chicago Music Exchange’s website. It is a beautiful one pickup Charvel 40th Anniversary Hot Rod Flames, San Dimas Style 1 guitar, Something about the colors and the flames I thought was f’ing cool as hell and I wanted one. The problem is it is a custom shop guitar and if you can lay your hands on one it is over $4200. I showed the picture around to friends of mine that have done custom body painting for me in the past and found it would cost me too much to have done so I kind of gave up on this one for the time being and kept it in a folder on my computer.
I was on Reverb and happen to see this pickguard. It might be the closest I get to the look of the Charvel, so I went ahead and ordered it. I figured I would eventually get to building a guitar with the pickguard as kind of the visual center piece. I finally had time to start thinking about what I would do and here is my project, description of the parts, and where I purchased them from.
Pickguard for Fender Strat - Hot Rod Flames
Arkansas Musicworks Reverb Store - $40.48
What was cool is I opened it to check it out before I decided to move forward because the one they shipped me did not have a humbucker in the bridge position. It was a SSS configured pickguard. I did not mind and started to formulate the configuration of the guitar.
I found a Fender Player II black Body on Stratosphere’s eBay store that came with the bridge, neck plate/screws, trem cover, and output jack and boat for $379. It was in mint condition.
Fender Player II Modified Strat BODY HARDWARE Alder Dusk
Stratosphere - US $379.99
What was coming together in my head was a late 60s, early 70s muscle car vibe. When I saw the listing for the Tonerider Surfari Strat Pickup set I thought it would fit perfectly plus I was really curious to see what they sounded like.

For the wiring I already had the components on hand. If you were to buy the parts in the parts kit you could get something comparable on Reverb for only $39.99.

The one part that I had to wait on after ordering it was a set of black pickup covers, knobs, and switch tip cap. I picked up the set on Amazon.

I did not have to order a neck because I already had the perfect neck for this project. It has a large headstock which is just fitting with this overall look. Plus, the fretboard is rosewood. Here is what I had and what you would need to get if you purchased one for your build.
