“Pandemic” is a common buzzword, in recent times. Did you know that Swine Flu was declared a pandemic back in August 2010? Let us have an overview of this disease and try to make a mind map of its similarities with COVID-19.
▬ 📌 Which organisms cause swine flu?
Hemophilus influenzae specifically the H1N1 virus is responsible for spreading swine flu. Transmission usually occurs from person to person, not animal to person.
Swine flu is very contagious. The disease is spread through saliva and mucus particles. People may spread it by:
🟡 Sneezing
🟡 Coughing
🟡 Touching a germ-covered surface and then touching their eyes or nose
▬ 📌 What are the symptoms of Swine Flu?
The symptoms of that are very much like those of regular influenza. They include:
🔵 chills
🔵 fever
🔵 coughing
🔵 runny or stuffy nose
🔵 body aches
🔵 fatigue
🔵 diarrhea
🔵 nausea and vomiting
▬ 📌 How do we establish pathogenesis?
Swine influenza virus infection follows the typical pattern for respiratory viral infections: virus entry is via aerosol, and there is a rapid progression of the infection in the epithelium of the nasal cavity and large airways.
Infection can progress to involve all airways in just a few hours.
Animals develop broncho interstitial pneumonia characterized by sharply demarcated lung lesions in the apical and cardiac lobes, with hyperemia, consolidation, and the presence of inflammatory exudates in the airways.
Histologically, epithelial surfaces are denuded, with an accumulation of intraluminal debris within affected airways.
▬ 📌 Can we diagnose with lab tests?
A doctor might make it by sampling fluid from your body. To take a sample, your doctor or a nurse may swab your nose or throat.
The swab will be analyzed using various genetic and laboratory techniques to identify the specific type of virus.
▬ 📌 What should be the treatment?
Most cases of swine flu do not require medication. A person does not need to see a doctor unless he is at risk for developing medical complications from the flu. You should focus on relieving your symptoms and preventing the spread of the H1N1 to other people
Two antiviral drugs are recommended for treating swine flu: the oral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir. Because flu viruses can develop resistance to these drugs, they are often reserved for people who are at high risk for complications from the flu. People who are otherwise generally healthy and get swine flu will be able to fight the infection on their own.
▬ 📌 Prevention against
Followed measures also help prevent the flu and limit its spread:
🟢 Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. Use soap and water, or if they're unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
🟢 Cover your coughs and sneezes. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow. Then wash your hands.
🟢 Avoid touching your face. including eyes, nose, and mouth.
🟢 Clean surfaces. Regularly clean often-touched surfaces to prevent the spread of infection from a surface with the virus on it to your body.
🟢 Avoid contact. Stay away from crowds if possible. Avoid anyone who is sick, If you are at high risk of complications from the flu.
