So today we’re giving you our latest edition of #1 in Our Hearts… Led Zeppelin style. On this show we honor songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But you know sometimes even the best songs come up short for reasons out of their control. Whether poor promotion, lack of radio play, or maybe even just being released ahead of their time, a lot of songs that deserved that top spot just didn’t get there.

So on this show, we put them back where they belong. On previous episodes we have covered Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC, and Rock N Roll All Nite by Kiss. Definitely all songs that should have reached that top spot.

Today we are getting into another song with Rock and Roll in the title. In fact, that is the title. It’s Led Zeppelin’s kick it into overdrive jam Rock and Roll, from their untitled fourth album. You know, Led Zeppelin didn’t release a lot of singles. But when they did, it seems like they never got much love on the charts. I think they had something like 10 charting songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. The highest, Whole Lotta Love did come in at #4 in 1969. But if you can believe it, that was their only Top 10 showing.

On average, Led Zeppelin’s singles scored a #36 ranking, barely making them a Top 40 band in the US… which let’s be honest… is shameful. I mean Zeppelin unleashed such a power-packed catalog, overflowing with classic rock standards… you would think on those rare occasions when they did release a single… they would be guaranteed to hit the Top 10.

Well, unfortunately, Rock and Roll was one of those Hot 100 casualties. I’m not going to tell you where it landed just yet, but I will say that it should have done a lot better. In the meantime, see if you can guess how it did, and I’ll come back to its chart position later in the episode.
