Central Co-op, the UK's second-largest co-operative, traces its origins back to the mid-19th century co-operative movement. Formed in 2013 through the merger of Anglia Regional Co-operative Society and Midlands Co-operative Society, it operates over 250 convenience stores and a funeral division comprising 180 funeral homes, a crematorium, three stone masonry outlets, and a coffin factory. Their property arm manages numerous buildings.
In 2021, Central Co-op adopted a new purpose: to 'create a sustainable society for all.' This ethos now guides decision-making across departments, including procurement, led by Paul Lockwood. It emphasizes themes like environmental sustainability, self-funding, inclusion, and self-help. Lockwood recognizes the enduring relevance of co-operative values, over 150 years since their inception.
