The Positive Effects of Including Refugees in Development Programs

More than 100 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide. And most will not be able to go back home any time soon. They face the challenge of having to rebuild their lives elsewhere.
To help displaced people become more self-reliant as they do so, different actors like international aid agencies, national governments, and businesses are increasingly working together to foster refugees’ economic and social inclusion. This collaborative approach is often called the Humanitarian-Development Nexus.
To assess whether this way of responding to forced displacement works, UNHCR tasked GPPi and the International Security and Development Center with conducting an independent evaluation that spanned four years. Drawing on evidence from Colombia, Jordan, and Kenya, among other data, our research team confirmed that efforts to include refugees in local development programs are yielding tangible benefits – for both refugees and the communities that host them.
This video summarizes some of our main findings and recommendations to governments, humanitarians, and development actors.
