Abstract:
Metra oversees all commuter rail operations in the 3,700-square-mile northeastern Illinois region, with responsibility for day-to-day operations, fare and service levels, capital improvements, and planning. Metra operates 242 stations on 11 different rail lines and is the fourth busiest commuter rail system in the United States by ridership. This presentation will provide a brief overview of Metra, including how they do business, and how business is conducted with Metra for a variety of capital projects. A specific focus of the presentation will be a discussion of planning and executing capital projects that further enhance Metra’s customer experience. Such infrastructure improvements will reduce train delays and increase Metra’s on-time-performance. Examples of capital projects include signal upgrades for greater fluidity and track/bridge upgrades to increase capacity. The presentation will also provide an overview and explanation of the areas that are managed by Metra’s Engineering Department.
