One of the coldest nights in over 35 years is coming to Northeast Florida this weekend (and most of Florida in general!). W haven't seen a hard freeze like this with temperatures down in the low 20's since 1989, when the great ice storm happened. We actually had snow in St. Augustine! I go over how to properly cover your plants and what else I’m doing to help save whatever plants I can. I also go over some plants that do not necessarily need any protection, such as pomegranate, peaches, plums, figs, berries, etc. Besides covering your plants or moving them into shelters such as garages, sheds, and greenhouses, you can also wrap your trees in incandescent string lighting, such as older Christmas tree lights with the larger bulbs or patio string lights. Any lights that give off heat. You can also place large barrels of water near your sensitive trees, or even place a gallon jug of hot water under your frost cloth so it helps maintain temperatures temporarily. Some people even go as extreme as lighting fires near their trees overnight or use space heaters.
