What is Cumulative Fatigue?
Cumulative fatigue is the process of never fully recovering from your run or workout before you do your next run or workout,
so you ACCUMULATE FATIGUE.
It can take anywhere from 2-14 days to fully recover from a run or workout, which means that you'll always have some residual fatigue that carries over to your next run.
This is an intentional part of training properly!
The GOAL of proper training for any goal is to put you in a state of cumulative fatigue without tipping into overreaching or overtraining.
This requires lots of careful balancing between work and recovery, and balancing easy and hard intensity, over days, weeks, and months of your training cycle!
Cumulative fatigue requires a gradual increase of volume/intensity over time.
This is why training volume increases slowly, not suddenly, and also why one of the biggest risks for overtraining is a large increase in either volume, intensity, or both.
You should never be so fatigued from one run or workout that you cannot execute the next one!
The goal is "tired legs", not "unable to complete my mileage because my body feels destroyed".
If you're constantly finding yourself incapable of completing your training, you might be running your easy days too hard, have chosen a training plan that's too aggressive for you, or both!
Cumulative fatigue helps us prepare for the physiological and psychological demands of racing by learning to run on tired legs (ESPECIALLY for the half & full marathon distances).
It also helps prepare your body to run farther and faster on race day than you could in training, because once you've accumulated all that fatigue, your taper process helps your body actually, finally, recover fully before your race day so you're at your strongest, freshest, and fittest!
