Nuchal Translucency Scan is a second scan performed in pregnancy. It is performed in the 3rd month. It is performed in the 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. In this scan what we do is we look for the baby’s heart beat. The length the of the baby, to check if the baby has grown appropriately for the age and we also look for the structures, by the 3rd month the fetus has already developed and main structures like the head, the heart, the upper and threw lower limbs and the spine has developed and we can look at the structures to see if there is any structural problems. Second is we look at the blood supply to the womb, by looking at this is we can product if a mother can develop high blood pressure in pregnancy. The third important reason why this is performed is to look for features of chromosomal abnormality and Downs syndrome is one of the common chromosomal abnormality with a prevalence about 1 in 600.
