The town was first established in 1762 and was originally called Fredrickstown. The Hummelstown Brownstone Company set up shop in 1863, operating quarries for 65 years. The company produced Hummelstown brownstone, which was used as building stone throughout the US. The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in downtown Hummelstown was built from the Hummelstown brownstone in 1893.
