It's no surprise every synonym of the word digital is popular right now. Business is looking for a way to economise. But what can we learn from this delayed reaction? That we should always be mindful of disaster and accommodating of contingency? That things will inevitably go wrong, and the timing will always be unforgiving?
Or, that unpredictability is what keeps things interesting?
If you didn't embrace omnichannel, you've likely felt the smoky wrath of the pace of technology this year. Bricks and Mortar partisans can taunt their members-only clubs; customers aren't venturing there to marvel at their exquisite foyers.
Were you careful about UX when you designed your website? Does the app you developed make good use of networking features? Or did you lean deep into Luddism and compartmentalise some demographics so neatly, you can barely find them?
Now that things have changed forever, it isn't about burping out a hackneyed online offering in place of your typical product. So if you're doing that, stop.
If you've had any measure of success, you've publicly proven demand for your IP. And that will remain. What will die a slow death, however, are those six destructive words that campaign for squatters' rights on the tip of your tongue; we've always done it this way.
Dear big business; it's heart-breaking, earth-shattering and will be met with much resistance. But the pandemic doesn't care.
