The Pakistan Navy has acquired four Type 054AP frigates from China, with the first vessel delivered in 2021. These modern warships significantly boost the capabilities of the Pakistan Navy. In this video, we’ll closely examine the design, armament, sensors and technologies of the Type 054AP frigates.
The Type 054AP is an improved variant of the Type 054A frigate, which is the workhorse of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. It has an advanced stealthy hull design and a displacement of about 4,000 tons. The frigate is powered by diesel engines and has a top speed of 27 knots.
The Type 054AP frigates are equipped with HQ-16 medium-range surface-to-air missiles and close-in weapon systems for self-defence. The ships carry 4 CM-302 anti-ship missiles in 2x2 launchers, which can strike targets at over 290 km. There is also a PJ-26 76mm main gun and 2x3 324mm torpedo tubes.
Sensors include a domestic Chinese phased-array radar, bow-mounted sonar, and ESM systems. There are provisions for embarking a medium-sized helicopter on the flight deck.
The #Type054AP frigates will significantly enhance the Pakistan Navy's surface warfare capabilities and patrol endurance. Their delivery also underscores the strong defence ties between China and Pakistan.
