One of the most stunning and beautiful scenes I think I’ve ever seen in Duluth Harbor! The saltie Federal Yukon backing under the Blatnik Bridge with tug assistance to load Petroleum Coke at the SMET terminal, with sun and blue skies on one side of the channel and thick fog on there other. This unusual weather pattern somehow held perfectly in place for several hours despite a strong breeze, the complex dynamic between the lake, the harbor and the hillside working its magic! I missed her arrival at the canal, but ultimately I’m happy I did, otherwise I might not have gone down Rice’s Point and captured this scene! Other vessels seen in this video are Gwen (unloading windmill turbines and blades), Heerengracht (unloading quartz), Federal Oshima (unloading cement), Missouri (harbor tug), and Vista Star (tour boat).
For those who prefer Canal action with the salutes and crowds, I also added in her departure the next evening and she left for Hull, Great Britain. Currently the ship is in the mid Atlantic still in route there 2 weeks after the filming date.
The Federal Yukon was built in 2000, making her quite old for a saltie! She measures 656ft long and can carry most types of bulk cargos, including grains and ores. One of the rare ocean going freighters I’ve seen that features a bow thruster, therefore only requiring a single tug at her stern for assistance, while most salties need two. She currently operates on Great Lakes to Europe runs, each one takes roughly 2 months round trip! Safe Journeys to her and her crew!
