I’ve used this drill while coaching elite athletes at the Division I level. If I only had five minutes to train an outfielder, this is the exact drill I’d use.
Whether you’re a coach looking for efficient team drills or a player trying to master the grass, the 12-Step Cone Drill covers every fundamental movement required for elite outfield play.
In today’s video, I’m working with Graham Toogood (Class of 2029) to break down everything from the first step and drop-step to efficient angles and the catch. This isn't just a drill—it's a complete system for outfield footwork.
📋 What You’ll Learn:
We focus on the "little things" that separate good players from elite outfielders:
Opening Mechanics: Perfecting the drop-step and speed turn.
The Approach: Reaching full speed while staying under control.
The Finish: Playing through the ball for a seamless throwing transition.
⚙️ Drill Setup:
Equipment: 5 Cones.
Layout: 4 cones in a square (approx. 15 strides apart) with 1 cone in the dead center.
Pro Tip: Scale the spacing based on age and skill level to challenge your athletes' range.
Watch until the end where I share advanced variations of this drill used at the highest levels of college baseball to take an outfielder from good to great.
