Discovered in the 1960s and early 1970s there are 42 caves in the national park, which was established in 1974. The caves came from the errosion of the limestone during 70 million years. For visitors open is the "Carverna Terciopelo" with it's spectacular vertical access on a 20m (60ft) ladder in climbing gear.
During the tour in the cave the guides explain quite a lot about the cave and give enough time to take photos. Make sure to see the papaya-room and the stalagmite sculpture "The Family".
Even the cave is the main attraction in the park, I just love the guided tour from the parking lot to the cave. The guides show and explain the local plants and animals for the hikers. Also the visitors will learn about the historical use of this caverns for the native indian tribes from 300 b.C.
Recommendations for the tour:
Use an 4x4 car. It's the only way to make it from the ranger station to the parking on the hill top by car. If you have no 4x4, you need to walk for approx. 90 minutes more!
From the parking to the caves is a 30 minutes walk. In the caves it is hot and can be muddy. Wear shoes for walking or sports. Flip-flops will be dangerous!
A special GRACIAS to Yow, who was the highly experienced guide on our 2020 tour.
