I run a logistics company out of Medellin Colombia and one day one of my employees came in to my office and told me his family had just purchased a new cattle ranch but had no money left to purchase animals to stock the land with. He told me if I wanted to buy animals and put them on their ranch they would split the profits with me. Interested I did some research on grass fed cattle gains and Colombia's cattle market and was surprised at what I read, the returns seemed too good to be true!
we would buy cattle at auction right after they were weened at 150 kilos, put them out to pastor only giving them salts and minerals as supplements and in 1 year they would have more than doubled to anywhere from 350 -400 kg, at which point we can return them to the auction sell them back to a finishing farm and we walk with a more than double return! even having to split this in half with the ranch owners was an amazing return so I quickly bought 30 heads which cots me about $12,000 USD. Then I started thinking, there would be tons of people interested in small $5,000-$10,000 size investments with the potential for more than 25% returns and I knew that Colombia had hundreds of thousands of acres of cattle land with owners just like my employees families, all the land with none of the money to invest in animals, infrastructure, and workers.
So I thought to create United Meats Cooperative Colombia! The idea is simple find and pair investors from around the world with rural land owners in Colombia to create a win-win for everyone.
Well, that was the easy part next I had to prove it was possible. I asked my employees family to help me find a piece of land that I could buy so I can use that as a proof of concept, its one thing to jump into an already working ranch as I did with those 30 animals but I needed to see what it would take both money wise and time to take neglected non-operational land and bring it online and into profitability. Be careful what you wish for right? they quickly found me San Felipe ranch which was a 243-hectare (650-acre) plot that was dilapidated, neglected, and abused over the last 25 years, perfect! The price tag was 1.8 billion pesos (roughly $500,000 USD) and the problem with Colombia is you can't get loans so we needed to come with cash. I had $125,000 USD in my life savings so I started asking around, and to my surprise within a week I had the other investors lined up, My little brother who lived in Utah, one of my best buddies from High school who lived in California and one of my best friends from out here who is originally from Kansas.
So we spoke with the owner who was a man who owned hotels on the other end of Colombia and we were able to work out a deal to pay out over the next year. the deal was 400 million pesos down ($115,000) , 600 million pesos in 6 months and the remaining 800 million within one year.
We all committed $100k and thought we'd throw on animals right away and be able to make up the other 100 grand through the cattle gains by the end of the year.
From there, well from there you will need to watch to find out how it all turns out. Ill do my best to make videos semi frequently to tell the story and take you all along for the ride.
At the time of making this first video we are a year and a half into operation, the land is paid off and we are scratching to get to profitability, it hasn't been easy but what the fuck did I expect? Im a gringo in the heart of Colombia with zero experience zero sense and close to zero Spanish but I got balls and some times thats all you need. Jump from the tree tops and reach for branches on the way down!
