In a recent incident, the United States claimed to have intercepted and shot down two missiles launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in the Red Sea. The U.S. Central Command reported the response to a distress call from a container ship that reported being struck by a missile while transiting the Southern Red Sea. The USS Gravely and the USS Laboon were activated, with the USS Gravely successfully intercepting two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled regions. This marks the 23rd reported illegal attack by the Houthis on international shipping since November 19, according to the U.S. The Houthi organization had previously threatened to disrupt international trade in the Red Sea in response to Israel's actions in Gaza.
