Filmed in front of the imposing mausoleum of Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza Debayle at Miami’s Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, this video features Professor Pedreira offering a sobering meditation on authoritarianism, exile, and the contested legacies of Latin American leadership. With the marble tomb as backdrop, Professor Pedreira confronts the paradox of power—its permanence in stone, and its impermanence in history.
As the last ruler of Nicaragua’s Somoza dynasty, Somoza governed with iron control until his overthrow by the Sandinista revolution in 1979. His regime, marked by repression, corruption, and close ties to U.S. interests, collapsed under the weight of popular resistance and international condemnation. Professor Pedreira revisits Somoza’s final years in exile, culminating in his assassination in Paraguay and burial in Miami—a city that became a refuge for both democratic exiles and fallen autocrats.
The mausoleum stands in stark contrast to the modest graves of democratic figures nearby, offering a visual metaphor for the divergent paths of Latin America’s political history. Professor Pedreira uses the site to explore how memory is shaped not only by ideals, but by the architecture of legacy—who is remembered, how, and why.
