Since 1989, the Southern Pacific was operating trains over the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Moffat Tunnel Route, between Denver and the Dotsero Cutoff in Bond, Colorado. By 1994, a mix of Rio Grande and Southern Pacific motive power commanded these trains over the breathtaking Rocky Mountains and through the six-mile Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide. Passenger trains included the classic Rio Grande Ski Train to Winter Park and Amtrak's California Zephyr. Two years later the SP would be absorbed into the massive Union Pacific system, along with the Moffat Tunnel Route.
