A 1938 black-and-white picture by American Republic Productions (in cooperation with A&P Food Stores), “Coffee From Brazil to You” takes its viewer from South America to the supermarket. Although coffee comes from most of the countries of Central and South America, Brazil is the greatest producer we’re told beginning at mark 01:08, especially Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. With that we begin the journey from plantation to consumer and see the central mountain plateaus as they’re first cleared of trees and underbrush before workers plant their seeds. After a few transplantation, the trees are moved to a permanent location on the plantation (mark 03:55) where they will take five or six years to mature. The film shows a fully developed coffee tree at mark 05:23 and shows us workers harvesting their berries and sending them for cleaning. One of the seeds in the berries — the coffee bean — is eventually removed. By mark 10:50 we learn how the outer covering of the bean is removed and then placed in large bags. After a quick scenic tour of Sao Paulo, the film turns its focus to Santos (mark 13:35), a port city that will take coffee to the world. Office works check samples of beans (mark 15:00) and roasted to taste the flavor before the cargo is loaded onto ships. Arriving in New York at mark 15:50 the beans are shown being unloaded and again sampled by an importer before transfer to a roasting plant and stored. At mark 19:00, bags of coffee are shown making their way down a conveyor belt before ending their journey in an American kitchen.
