Water treatment and risk management are critical components in ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water for Australian communities. With the emergence of new contaminants that are considered likely toxic to human health, such as Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and the rising issue of water security and water scarcity driving increased demand for non-rainfall dependent drinking water solutions, implementation of cost-effective treatment strategies is critical.

But what does this look like under current regulatory environment in Australia and what risks lie below the surface?

🔍 In this session:

This CPD session will provide an overview and definition of PFAS, while exploring the steps utilities can take to assess and mitigate PFAS risks, including the implementation of PFAS capture and destruction treatment technologies.

Due to their complex structure, fate, and transport behaviours, PFAS precursors pose unique challenges in monitoring and water treatment. Including the emerging issue of interaction between PFAS and microplastics wherein microplastics can act as vectors for PFAS contamination in aquatic ecosystems. This interaction not only complicates the monitoring and removal of both PFAS and microplastics but also amplifies the environmental and health risks associated with their persistence in the environment.

Participants will also discover effective water treatment processes to address the challenges of monitoring and removing contaminants, ensuring public safety and environmental protection.
