Heino Eller (1887-1970) was an Estonian composer and teacher, arguably the most influential figure in 20th-century Estonian music. For more on Eller, see my score video of his "13 Piano Pieces on Estonian Motives": • Heino Eller - 13 Piano Pieces on Estonian ...
Eller's third and final symphony was written in 1961, nine years before his death, and it premiered in March 1962 in Tallinn. Although Eller retained the basis of his harmonic language throughout his career, compared to the first symphony, one might note a clear shift from strong impressionistic influences and quite free form to a more rigid, martial idiom. Estonia's political situation during his career played a significant role in this shift; Eller wrote his first symphony in 1936, and four years later, Estonia, along with Latvia and Lithuania, was initially annexed by the Soviet Union. Eller's musical thinking at the time did not sit well with the Soviets, and his work was denounced in the early years of the occupation. After this period, like many composers living under Soviet rule at the time, he simplified his style in accordance with official diktats of socialist realism.
This symphony is a very fine example of Eller's later period, and it is a crime that no modern commercial recording exists. As his work remains regularly played at least within Estonia, I hope one will become available sooner rather than later.
