For centuries, the power and majesty of theatre have been attributed to its liveness: the thrill of seeing an actor physically onstage, the experience of sitting shoulder to shoulder with other attendees; the knowledge that no two performances could ever be exactly alike. The current global pandemic has raised questions about the future viability of theatre. Is theatre—as so many people have questioned over the past two centuries (with the advent of film, radio, television)—a moribund anachronism? In this keynote, Harvey Young spotlights how theatre not only has survived but, surprisingly, has thrived (despite adverse conditions) by embracing recording technologies as well as minimalist staging practices. Young argues that it is the idea of the live and not the material conditions of liveness that gives and has always given theatre its particular resonance as well as its ability to withstand the global health crisis.

Pendant des siècles, la puissance et la gloire du théâtre ont été attribuées à son caractère vivant : les sensations que procure la vue d’une actrice ou d'un acteur en personne sur une scène ; le fait d’être assis aux côtés des autres spectateurs et spectatrices ; le fait de savoir qu’il n’y a pas deux représentations exactement pareilles. La pandémie mondiale actuelle a soulevé des questions quant à la viabilité du théâtre dans l’avenir. Est-ce que le théâtre — plusieurs personnes ayant remis en question son existence au cours des deux derniers siècles (avec l’avènement du cinéma, de la radio et de la télévision) — est un anachronisme moribond ? Dans ce discours liminaire, Harvey Young montre comment le théâtre a non seulement survécu, mais s’est étonnamment développé (malgré des conditions difficiles) en adoptant les technologies d’enregistrement ainsi que des pratiques de mise en scène minimalistes. Young soutient que c’est l’idée du vivant et non les conditions matérielles de ce fait vivant qui donne et qui a toujours donné au théâtre sa résonance particulière et sa capacité à surmonter la crise sanitaire mondiale actuelle.
