The destruction of the German observation balloon near Krynki temporarily blinded German artillery in the Baranovichi sector, demonstrating the potential of the new Le Prieur rocket weapon. Though inaccurate and extremely dangerous to use, the success of Praporshchik Vladimir Kaminsky’s attack proved that heavily defended observation balloons could be destroyed if pilots were willing to risk flying directly into concentrated anti-aircraft fire.
Russian aviation command quickly began planning additional balloon attacks.
German commanders, however, responded by strengthening their defenses. Anti-aircraft guns were reinforced around balloon positions, and fighter patrols increased over key observation sectors.
One such balloon operated near the village of Bogushi, southwest of Gorodishche, providing German artillery observers with an excellent view of Russian supply routes and troop movements. Russian command identified it as a priority target.
On 18 September 1917, Kaminsky volunteered to attack the position. Flying a Nieuport 21 armed with eight Le Prieur rockets, he climbed to nearly 4,000 meters before crossing the front lines.
The balloon was already in the air at roughly 1,500 meters, protected by anti-aircraft batteries. Approaching from the north, Kaminsky began a steep diving attack as German guns opened fire and the balloon crew attempted to lower the aerostat.
Closing to extremely short range at about 800 meters altitude, Kaminsky fired six rockets, several striking the envelope directly. The hydrogen-filled balloon ignited almost instantly, and the observers parachuted from the basket as it collapsed in flames.
Kaminsky passed so close to the burning balloon that the wheels of his Nieuport briefly struck the envelope, throwing the aircraft upward in violent turbulence. His engine momentarily failed to respond, forcing him to glide through heavy anti-aircraft fire before it finally restarted, allowing him to escape and return safely to his airfield.
This mission recreates that daring attack.
