As a PGA Teaching Professional, a regular topic in golf instruction is lag and releasing the club through impact. A byproduct of good lag and a powerful release is a full extension. Often, I think many golfers have a hard time creating lag and extension because they don't exercise the proper body parts and muscles. In order to create better positions with your golf swing, you must train the appropriate muscles.
Start by exaggerating the shaft lean to imagine and feel the sensation of proper lag and release. You must practice these moves slowly to encourage them to happen at a faster speed. Slow motion practice is one of the best ways to practice when you are not making swings to impact the golf ball. Imagine compressing down and through the ball.
As you watch these attached videos, notice how much better the technique of the golfer looks when the swing is performed slowly. I always try to tell my students that if they can't practice performing the swing to perfection at a slow speed, it would never be performed to perfection at a fast speed. Of course, you have to start somewhere, but learning to slow down is a key ingredient to getting better. If you are rushed when you practice, you won't get the most out of your practice session.
Trust your golf coach or teaching professional as they help you. Remember that they want you to succeed and they only want you working on one or two things at a time. Give the drills time to work and influence your swing. Too many people take a golf lesson and then revert to other swing thoughts without giving their swing a chance to feel the instructor's results. Stay patient and slow down.
Here are a couple quick tips pertaining to improving your lag and extension:
• Slow down, be patient and trust what you are working on
• When you practice, don't rush
• Exercise the muscle relative to your swing mechanics
• Get more flexibility
