Twin bomb blasts ripped through a market area in central Baghdad, Iraq on Saturday... killing at least 27 people and wounding 53.
The attack was claimed by the so-called Islamic State group.
A Baghdad police official said the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers in the al-Sinak neighborhood, and according to AFP, the death toll was confirmed by officials with the interior ministry and a hospital.
Huge crowds were expected to gather in the streets of Baghdad Saturday night for New Year's Eve celebrations... for only the second time since a years-old curfew was lifted in 2015.
The city has been on high alert since operations to retake the city of Mosul from Islamist militants began in October.
