In this video, we’re going to look at a new way to make money online, and that is by becoming a narrator for a published audiobook. The going rates for voice-narration vary and will be dependent on the length of the book. But good-sized books, of up to 100000 words, or 10 hours of reading time long, can snag the speaker $3000,. That’s potentially $300 an hour!

To search and find books to narrate using our voice, head on over to acx.com. There, you can choose the books you’ll like to read from a large library of authors, and can find a sizeable number of potential voice-acting gigs. As a welcomed bonus, the finished audiobooks that you produce will be available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes for the world to discover and listen to.

On the ACX homepage, scroll down and select “are you an actor or producer.” and then click the button below “find titles open for auditions.”

This page will show you the total number of books on the platform, actively waiting for voice narration. From the drop-down menu, you can sort by “Amazon Sales Rank.” This sorting criterion will be based on which book is the best seller of the bunch. You may also choose to sort by the post date, the most recent being top of the list.

From the left side menu, you can further sort the selections based on your style of reading, tone of voice, or personal preference. Select Fiction or Non-Fiction. Choose English, French, German, or Spanish. Just a quick note here, there will always be less competition for non-English speakers, so those that know, and can speak in another language, will have a leg up on the other narrators.

If you can speak in a unique accent, select it here. But authors who are looking for narrators who can speak in pre-determined accents are rare. The same can be said for a vocal style, like enthusiastic/excited, melodramatic, or persuasive. As the exact vocal style is usually discussed, negotiated, and changed often during the audition process.

Other important sorting criteria are vocal age. Young children, to adults, to the elderly. Project length. Under 3 hours to over 10 hours. And project status, which will just filter out the titles with only pending offers.

From the titles that match your search, select a book to learn more about the pending project. This page shows you info that you, as a voice-actor, need to know. It lists the estimated talking length based on the word count. Just for future reference, speaking 500 words usually takes about 3 and a half minutes.

It lists the language needed. The most common being English. And the distribution. Exclusivity means that only a few retailers are given the option of carrying the book in its store. Exclusive distribution is an agreement between a supplier, and a retailer, granting the retailer exclusive rights to carry the supplier's product.

It lastly shows the territory, which is where the audiobook will be released. World means worldwide and not restricted by geographical location.

Finally, there are two ways a person can get paid.

1. Your per-finished-hour rate, paid upon successful completion of the audiobook. Also known as a PFH rate.
2. You can share royalties from sales with the Rights Holder.
