In this video we visit Thornton, a station on New South Wales' Main Northern Line in the eastern suburbs of Maitland. Thornton is served by passenger rail services on NSW Trainlink's Hunter Line from Newcastle, and sees dozens of freight trains pass through it each day on the busy Hunter Valley Coal Rail Network between the coal fields and the Port of Newcastle.
On the Hunter Line we see Endeavour and Hunter railcars arrive and depart the station, plus we see the XPT from Casino towards Sydney fly through the station. On the adjacent freight lines we see plenty of freight trains, including monster Pacific National coal trains, but we also see others including a Pacific National intermodal, a QUBE grain train, and a Southern Shorthaul Railroad grain train.
All these clips were recorded while waiting for two steam trains as part of the Hunter Valley Steamfest. The first we see is Victorian Railways locomotive R766 which is heading towards the Port Waratah Coal Loop in Newcastle. The second we see is Beyer-Garratt 6029 as it heads towards Maitland after visiting Newcastle.
Thornton station opened on the 1st August 1871 as Woodford, but was renamed to Thornton in 1887 to avoid confusion with Woodford station in the Blue Mountains. The current station was built in 1913 when the Main Northern Line between Maitland and Waratah was quadruplicated to cater for the area's increasing coal traffic. The station received a DDA compliant upgrade in the early 2000's (I think the plaque said 2002), which saw a new footbridge built with lift access.
