This was a fascinating story because I did not see this dealbreaker quality in him right away.

It took being out with friends and family a few times to see this was an inborn trait of his that he would not/maybe could not change. No one likes someone condescending.

Because you don't introduce someone to your friends and family right away, and this trait never came out when it was just the two of us, I was already in love with him before I saw and realized the scope of its damage.

It was tough to let go because in private he did treat me like a partner and an equal. But there was no way I could raise children with that personality trait and make everyone I cared about feel patronized for the rest of my life.

It made him an enormous success at work, however! Sales and the kill are his 1st love. So that made him not want to change it even if he could.
