38. Metallurgy - Extraction of Zinc - Belgian Retort Process

Описание: In this lecture, we will be discussing the Extraction of Zinc - Belgian Retort Process

Highlights:

1. ZnO zincite
2. ZnS zinc-blende/sphalerite
3. ZnCO3 calamine
4. ZnO.Fe2O3 zinc ferrite/frenklenite
The process like concentration, roasting ,froth flotation etc are followed

BELGIAN RETORT PROCESS
The retort used is 1.5 m in length and 25 cm in diameter.coke is he reducing agent. Temperature
Maintained is 1100-1200 degree Celsius. From the retort gases are removed. When blue flame comes out from the retort , co burns .when blue flame changes to green then receiver is attached. Green flame is due to burning of zinc vapours. Temperature of the condenser is maintained nearly 500degree Celsius. Zinc vapours are condensed.
ZnO+C=Zn+CO
2C+O2=2CO
2CO+O2=2CO2
Zn+CO2= ZnO+CO
Melting point of Zinc=419.7 degree Celsius
Boiling point of Zinc =907 degree Celsius
Spelter is impure zinc . it has 2% lead along with As,Fe,Cu,Cd,ZnO etc.
